Friends, Romans, Fl*sters, I’m afraid this is going to be a rant at the universe, so please feel free to wander on by.
Last July I developed chronic heartburn, nothing I ate was settling and I felt like crap. Months have gone by and the doctors have prescribed various anti-acids and PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) they seem to work for a couple of weeks and then I’m back to square one. I’ve even had an endoscopy and all the gastric specialist has said is there is some inflammation in the stomach, and if I want he will write to me GP and prescribe some different anti-acids!
Last week my acid went through the roof, the burning was horrendous and eating has become a chore. So back to the doctors I went, a bunch of blood tests later and all she can tell me is I’m not Celiac and I’m doubling your dose of Esomeprazole and throwing in some Gaviscon for good measure.
By Thursday I was climbing the walls with the discomfort, and so I hit the internet! It looks like I might be suffering from Gastritis or IBS or any number of fun filled things. The only constant thing is a suggestion to alter my eating habits! So far that means:
No more:
Chocolate
Coffee
Alcohol
Spicy food
Fatty food
Sugary food
Or basically anything that is remotely tasty! No matter what I’m trying I’m still having the problem, when I suggested changing my diet the doctor just looked at me blankly and said, “I’ve told you you’re not Celiac, and you can’t keep cutting things out of your diet.”
Well duh! I do know that! But until I can figure out how to stop this burning pain. I just don’t know what to do, hell I can’t even get a proper diagnosis out of them. I will admit she did say to me if this combination of drugs doesn’t work, she might think about writing to my consultant for advice.
So off I toddled to the net again and now I’m trying Slippery Elm and Aloe Vera juice in an attempt to ease the symptoms after Holland and Barrett suggested it, they even sent me to Boots to ask the pharmacist for advice. When I told him what I was taking, he looked at me and said, “Hmmm that’s a strong combination, it should be helping.” Well I hate to tell you buddy it’s bloody well not! He did also suggest a probiotic and peppermint oil, so at least he was more helpful than my doctor.
Now I’m sitting here gurgling away after my breakfast of porridge, followed by lunch of a baked sweet potato, carrots, a bit of broccoli, half a yorkshire pudding (which I’m starting to regret) and a piece of fish….and that’s another bloody thing I’m no longer a veggie because I need the protein. I’ve been a veggie since I was 18, and I’m hating every second of this.
I’m so sorry for bleating on, I know there are people out there with much bigger problems than this, but it’s really starting to get me down now. I promise normal service will be resumed shortly, I still owe comments and I’m determined to finish editing a story that’s been sat on my lap top for months.
A16 is going to be so much fun if all I can eat is mashed potato!
